{{GIVEAWAY}} The Little Engine That Could - Tales to Play Game

One of my childhood memories is that of my mother reading The Little Engine That Could to me. It was her favorite children's book and became one of mine as well. Luckily I have children who also love to read, and given their love of trains, not surprisingly enjoy this classic story as well.

When I was introduced to the Tales to Play line of games by Patch Products, I was so excited that one of the games was based on The Little Engine that Could. The line also includes Where the Wild Things Are (ages 6 and up), Mother Goose (ages 3 and up) and The Berenstain Bears (ages 4 and up). The game boxes are cleverly designed like a large book with a cover that opens so that you can take a peak inside. Colorful game boards, 3D accessories and pawns truly bring the book to life.

The Little Engine That Could game comes with "Little Engine" playing pieces and a 3D "mountain" that the players have to chug up in order to make it to the other side to deliver all the toys and candy to all the good little children. Players take turns picking cards that will determine how many spaces their engine will move. The only complaint here is that there aren't a lot of cards and even if only 2 people are playing, you will have to shuffle at least once.

The game is not only entertaining - Jake's and my favorite part is when the train zips down the mountain - but also teaches turn-taking skills, counting and understanding what a "space" is on a game board. I like that no matter who finishes first, each player has the opportunity to ultimately win. Where your train lands after coming down the mountain gives the player an increasing amount of points dependent on how far the train travels. You also receive points for coming in 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Add the points together and you can be the last train off the mountain and still win.

What I'm Reading

In my last "What I'm Reading" I shared that I was reading Ann Packer's Swim Back to Me and I wish I could say I enjoyed it. It included two novellas bookending four short stories and I have to admit I only made it through the first novella and a few pages into the first short story. It just was to "deep" for my taste and was my first novel by Packer.

However, I just finished another Nicholas Sparks novel, Safe Haven. There is something about the way he writes that can easily draw you in and the next thing you know you are sitting in a bathtub of freezing cold water. Well, at least that is where I ended up. It was a little too predictable but sometimes there is some comfort in the predictable.

As for what is on my bedside table right now, I've got Our Lady of the Forest by David Guterson (author of Snow Falling on Cedars) and The Hunting Wind (the 3rd of the Alex McKnight mysteries) by Steve Hamilton. I try to always have a few options on hand. I simply have to have a book to read and I can't risk not liking a book and not having a back-up.

{{GIVEAWAY}} Citiblocs - Build Anything!

::: CLOSED - CONGRATS KELLIE CONKLIN:::
Both my toddlers know how to work an iPod, my iPhone, a Blackberry and my husbands Android phone. They can't understand why my computer screen doesn't "work" when they touch it and it has taken a lot of time-outs to learn that the wall-mounted TV can't be touched either. I knew it was time for an intervention of sorts and reintroduce a simpler, low-tech if you will, toy. The award-winning CitiBlocs was the perfect solution and everyone in the family joins in the fun.

Here is Luke, my 2-year-old, building his own creation using CitiBlocs:

He is building with the CitiBlocs 100 piece wooden building set in Camouflage Colors. It includes 4 super cool new colors: green, olive, brown, khaki plus natural blocks. There is a building guide included but don't expect too much direction. There are lots of great pictures but no step-by-step directions. Your younger children will need a lot of help making these creations but as you can see in the video, Luke was simply happy making up his own. My husband on the other hand would have preferred more detailed instructions but was able to make the following in less than 15 minutes.

The boys have been using them to build train tracks and tunnels for their toy trains. Once the boys were finished and off to bed, my husband the science teacher, made the DNA project. It takes a steady hand, but it is quite cathartic as you must concentrate when making the more complex designs. The kids on the other hand are just simply having fun. No recharging required.

WIN IT!: One of my readers will win a CitiBlocs 100 piece wooden building set (ARV: $25)

TO ENTER: Head to the Citiblocs and let me know one of the awards they have won (left hand side under main banner).

I hate commercials... but...

I think the best invention is the DVR. I don't have to watch another commercial again! However, Target's Back to School commercials were fabulous this year, especially this one:

and I simply can't get this song out of my head (Haven't we all had a teacher like this?):

Note: As a former teacher I am allowed to make fun of teachers.

Name That Tune! - Episode 2 Who Run the World? (Girls)

The Answer is: "Who Run the World? (Girls)" by Beyonce
Thought it wasn't too early to teach him the truth. ::wink wink::

Not that I am trying to stump you but I think last week's song was pretty easy. I think this week might be a bit more challenging...

My 4-year-old Jake loves to sing. The problem is, we can't always tell what he is singing. Sometimes it is a song he's heard on the radio, sometimes it is a song from one of his favorite shows.

Can you name that tune?

I'd love to hear your guesses! Don't forget to check back tomorrow for the answer and next week for yet another episode of Name That Tune!
