A Life Saver! Good Nite Lite Giveaway

Due to my mistake - I am extending the deadline for this contest - It now ends 7/12 - Apologies!
Every new parent dreams of the day that they get to sleep until a reasonable time in the morning. While Luke is still too young to use this most amazing product, Jake is using it and it is simply amazing! Using the Good Nite Lite, I get to set the time he goes to bed and wakes up. Sounds too good to be true? I assure you, it isn't.

"The Good Nite Lite is a patent pending, behavioral modification device designed to promote a child's ability to get the rest that is critical for healthy development. If a child is in the habit of waking up at a certain time, they will tend to continue this regular pattern until it is reset. Unfortunately, if the established pattern is to wake up too early, the result is a that a child will become active on their own schedule which interferes with their own healthy sleep pattern and can be a disruptive influence to the entire household particularly Mom and Dad! It can be extremely difficult to modify this pattern without a visual cue that can be easily understood by even very young children. The Good Nite Lite provides exactly this behavioral cue with its easily distinguished display of the Moon, meaning, 'time to rest' and Sun display meaning 'time to get up!'"

Jake was 2 months shy of 3 years old when we started using the Good Nite Lite. You set the clock to come on at night at the designated bed time - the sun will turn blue, a moon. It will stay blue all night so that if he wakes up early (before the time you have set as the wake up time), he knows that it is still sleeping time and will go back to sleep. When the light turns yellow, a sun, he knows it is time to wake up. It took 2 days for him to get the hang of it. The first and second day we used it, he woke up early. I went into his room and told him that the sun/moon was still blue and to wait until it turned yellow. He went back to sleep and yelled for me when the Good Nite Lite turned to yellow.

Since then it has been magical. His Good Nite Lite is set to turn to yellow/the sun at 7:30 and every morning at that time, give or take a minute or two, he will call for me or my husband to come and get him.  A bit of a disclaimer; we worked very hard with Jake and his sleep training from an early age so he is a good sleeper. However he was, before we started using the Good Nite Lite, getting up whenever he wanted to. That meant some days it was 6:30, other days 8:00. It is wonderful to know when Jake will wake up. I can have his breakfast ready and avoid the screaming, "Waffles! Water! Milk!" Now when I go see him in the morning he sweetly says, "Jakey Wakey."

Get Healthy Gift Bag - American Cancer Society

I know of no one that has not been affected by cancer in one way or another. In my family there are two that are living with cancer and so when I was approached by the American Cancer Society to host a healthy lifestyle promotion on my blog to help celebrate the launch of the Choose You movement which encourages women to put their own health first in the fight against cancer, I was excited and honored to do so.

"According to the American Cancer Society, about half of all cancer deaths could be prevented if people maintained a healthy weight through diet and regular exercise; avoided tobacco products; and got recommended cancer screening tests. As busy moms know, it’s not always easy to incorporate these healthy behaviors into a busy lifestyle! In fact, a new national survey of approximately 2,000 women ages 25-64 revealed that they are so busy being caretakers of others, they have little time to take care of their own health."

Choose You is a new nationwide movement to shine the spotlight on a sobering statistic: one in three women will get cancer in her lifetime. Choose You (www.chooseyou.com) is designed to inspire women to take action and put their health first in order to stay well and help prevent cancer. Celebrity Ambassador Ellen Pompeo and National Sponsors Sprite Zero and Walgreens kicked off the movement on May 4th encouraging women to "choose themselves first." As part of the Choose You movement, women are encouraged to sign a Choose You Commitment, an online pledge to reach a specific, individual health goal. At ChooseYou.com, women can choose from five different health categories: Eat Right; Get Active; Get Recommended Health Screenings; Protect Your Skin; and Quit Smoking.

To help celebrate and get the word out, The American Cancer Society would like to give away a Get Healthy gift bag to one of my readers!

GET IT! A Get Healthy gift bag from The American Cancer Society which includes a Walgreens gift card, Choose You Stainless Water Bottle, Lapel Pin, Ladies Tee, Hair Clip, Pens, and Neutrogena Age Shield+Repair Anti-aging Sunblock.

WIN IT!: Which healthy habit do you most want to adopt right now?  (i.e. Eat right, get fit, stop smoking, protect your skin, get regular health checks)

Eczema Relief - Hazelaid Healing Naturally

I have written about my son Luke's struggle with eczema in the past. Luckily, as he has gotten older, it has gotten much better. When he was very little I would endure the horrible looks that others would give me when Luke's face had open sores on his little cheeks. I wish I had known of Hazelwood then. It has been used for hundreds of years by Native Americans to help relieve numerous ailments, especially teething pain in babies. The wood is an alkaline substance and seeks Ph balance by naturally absorbing acid when in contact with skin. Hazelaid Healing Naturally is a company that makes products out of Hazelwood and has found that it also works with people suffering from eczema.

The necklace that we reviewed gets comments all the time. It is adorable and Luke looks pretty hip in it. When I explain what it is, I always get the obvious question: Does it work? The answer isn't really that simple. Since we never know when Luke will have an outbreak, we can't know if he would or wouldn't have had one when he was wearing the necklace. What  I can say is that he hasn't had an outbreak on his face or torso since he has worn it!

The necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry made with pieces of wood from the hazelnut tree have the unique property of absorbing the excess acid produced in our bodies when it is in contact with our skin. With eczema, Hazelaid Healing Naturually have found that approximately 75% of cases find significant relief from wearing the necklace. It is important to note that there is the chance that you/your child may fall in the 25% category whose eczema is not acid based. Hazelaid carries 234 unique products, including Baltic Amber and Soap Nuts, all which provide natural solutions to common ailments. Other ailments that might be due to an acidity imbalance (according to Hazelaid) and thus may benefit from their products are: Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Acid Reflux, Heart Burn, Ulcers, Acne, Cold Sores, Headaches, and Migraines. I suffer from chronic dry skin and wonder if Hazelaid will help me? Luke just might have to share with me for a few weeks.

BUY IT: Hazelaid is offering my readers an exclusive discount promo code for 10% off your order! Use the following code just below the zip code/postal code box in your shopping cart: ADDICTED10   Expires August 3, 2010

A Little Explaination?

So a previous post had me promising that I would be back to "work" on my blog, only to have me disappear again for 3 more days. Before all this, I was already so far behind and now... well, now all I can do is take one thing at a time and hope by August I will be back on track.

To explain my somewhat cryptic previous post:

1. I have a sensitive stomach and an ulcer so it should be no surprise that the food poisoning lasted a bit longer than I had hoped or expected. Still trying to convince my stomach and intestines to forgive me but they are still mighty upset.

2. Nathan had oral surgery last Thursday and had all his wisdom teeth removed plus a tooth that apparently didn't fit and grew out of the roof of his mouth instead. Being the wonderful, and observant, parent that I am, I didn't know this tooth was there until 2 years ago. Nathan had assumed it was normal to have an "extra" tooth and thus never told me. Makes you wonder, don't it?

3. The source of the rotten milk smell in the back seat of my car turned out to be, yes, rotten milk. Two sippy cups in a small soft sided cooler had leaked and now I know why they have floor mats. One sippy cup was in a cup holder disguised as water. At least I assumed it was water. Clearly, I was wrong.

4. The two scantily clad women outside the Sunset Marquis Hotel were probably hookers. At least that was the consensus from the comments you all left. Why was I surprised they were "working" on a Wednesday night? I guess their "services" are needed every day of the week, not just weekends.

I do want to add how fabulous my readers are. The comments and emails I received were so sweet and caring. Unfortunately, this is my life. No dull moments. So, if you will be going to NYC for BlogHer and would like some free entertainment - I will be the one holding my breath & crossing my fingers that I don't somehow end up in jail, mugged or otherwise make the evening news.

Pool and Play Set Safety for the Summer ... and Beyond!

(Forgive the lame attempt at humor in my post title - We've been watching Toy Story way too much in this household.)

We had, what felt like, the longest winter this year and as soon as it got warm enough to go outside without a coat on, my kids were out the door! Keeping out kids safe while they play and swim is always of utmost concern and Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading product safety testing organization, has provided us with some useful tips to help keep you and your children safe around play sets and the pool.

If your children are like mine, sometimes it takes someone else to convince them of what is safe and what is not.  My oldest is 18-years-old and just yesterday we went through this! Disney and UL have teamed up and with the help of Timon and Pumba from The Lion King, have made a water safety video that makes learning fun! Wild About Safety: In the Water

Here are a few of my favorite tips from UL:
  • Always drain wading pools after children are done playing. As you know, children can drown in just a few of inches of water.
  • Cut overhanging tree limbs and remove chairs or ladders from the pool area. These are all things that children can use to climb over a fence that surrounds a pool.
  • When installing protective surfacing for play sets, such as rubber tiles or mulch under the play set, do so with at least six feet in all directions, to prevent serious injuries should a child fall.
Tried and true and worth repeating:
    •   At any water spot, the 10/20 rule states an observant parent should scan the pool every 10 seconds, and never be more than 20 seconds away from the area. Supervision, along with a basic knowledge of CPR, stand among the staples of pool safety.
    •   At any playground, watch for enclosed spaces, protruding bolts or tree stumps, and comb through the sand box before your child digs in to help avoid risks presented by glass shards, animal droppings, or other hazards.
     •   To avoid constant worry at the pool this summer, construct a tall fence, keep the area around the pool clear of tree limbs and other debris, and clearly mark all drains and filters. Store rescue devices nearby, drain wading pools after use, and always remove toys from the pool so children don't try to play with them without supervision.

Enjoy the holiday weekend & be safe!

Blood, West Hollywood, Rotten Milk and Food Poisoning

That pretty much sums up the last 48 hours of my life.

I know that my postings have been few and far between, not to mention that there are winners to be chosen however,  I need an evening to recover and then I will explain more and get back to doing what you all are here for anyway (you mean it isn't to hear me complain?), giveaways!

Until then you can find me close to a bathroom, changing bloody gauze in Nathan's mouth, finding the source of the rotten milk smell emanating from the back seat of my car and trying to figure out if the two gals I saw outside the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood were hookers or were simply mugged and had the majority of their clothing stolen.
